What Are the Different Types of Drones That Exist Today?

The idea of buying a drone was a pipe dream just a few short years ago. But today, there are almost 1 million recreational and commercial drones registered throughout the country. If you’re interested in investing in a drone, you should make sure that you know how to use a drone prior to buying one. You should also learn about why to use a drone and figure out some of the things that it’ll be able to do. But maybe most importantly, you should read up on the different types of drones. It’ll make it possible for you to purchase a drone that’s going to live up to your specific expectations.

Today, we’re going to discuss several of the most popular types of drones. We’re also going to sprinkle in some benefits of using a drone and set you up with a few tips for using a drone in the process.

Continue reading to find out what you need to know about the main types of drones.

Multi Rotor Drones:

Of all the different types of drones on this list, multi-rotor drones are easily the most popular option. When you’re on the hunt for a drone, there is a good chance that you’re going to stumble upon quite a few multi-rotor drones that will prove to be great options for you.

Multirotor drones are routinely used by both recreational drone users and those who use drones for professional purposes. They’re perfect for taking aerial photography, conducting aerial surveillance, and more.

Most multi-rotor drones are very easy to manufacture, and as a result, they tend to be on the less expensive side. This is another thing that has made them so popular in recent years.

But it’s worth noting that there are some multi-rotor drones that might end up costing you a pretty penny. So you’ll want to shop around for a multi-rotor drone that will fit into your budget if you’re going to invest in one soon.

Fixed Wing Drones:

When you picture a drone in your head, there is a pretty good chance that you picture a multi-rotor drone. They look almost like helicopters with their various rotors.

Fixed-wing drones, on the other hand, don’t have this same look. As opposed to taking on the appearance of helicopters, fixed-wing drones look more like airplanes with their fixed-wing configuration.

Because of the way in which they’re built, fixed-wing drones can’t sit in one place for too long as multi-rotor drones can. They’re always going to be battling against gravity, which is why you’ll see them moving around at all times after they take flight.

This can limit how you can use a fixed-wing drone. You can’t use them for, say, aerial photography since they won’t stay in one place for a long enough time to take the pictures that you need.

But you can use fixed-wing drones for longer drone operations. In fact, there are some fixed-wing drones that can stay up in the air for 16 hours or more in some cases. This gives them an advantage over multi-rotor drones, which typically can only take flight for a short period of time before they’ll run out of battery power and need to come back down to earth.

Single Rotor Drones:

We just alluded to the fact that multi-rotor drones look a lot like helicopters when they’re up in the air. But it’s actually single-rotor helicopters that look exactly like helicopters thanks to their single rotor design.

You might think that, regardless of how they each look, multi-rotor and single rotor helicopters would both produce the same results. But single-rotor helicopters tend to be a lot more efficient than multi-rotor ones. They can fly for longer times, and in certain instances, they can even be powered by gas engines.

Single rotor helicopters do require a certain level of training before you can begin using them. They’re also more likely to be involved in fatal accidents than multi-rotor drones. But it might be worth taking on these extra risks if you’re going to turn yourself into a serious drone user.

Fixed Wing Hybrid VTOL Drones:

Fixed-wing hybrid VTOL drones are the most advanced type of drones out there today. They take the best elements of multi-rotor drones and fixed-wing drones and smash them together. To create drones that can both hover in one place for a long time. And stay in the air for a long time.

If Amazon really starts to deliver packages to people’s homes with drones like some people are predicting, fixed-wing hybrid VTOL drones are going to be the types of drones that will be used. They’re capable of doing some incredible things and could help usher in a whole new era for drones as a whole.

How to Choose the Right Type of Drone:

If you want to buy a drone, it’ll be imperative that you pick out the right kind. As you’ve seen here, there are so many types of drones for you to choose from.

You should think about:

  • How you’ll use your drone
  • What you’re willing to spend on a drone
  • How much training you want to take part in before using a drone

Which of These Types of Drones Would You Like to Buy?

Now that you know more about the different types of drones that are out there, you should start shopping for a drone today. Use what you’ve learned here to pick out the type of drone that you like the most.
