The Importance Of Keeping Your Fridge Clean

It’s often said that the kitchen is the heart of the home, a warm, cosy place where the entire family can gather and enjoy each other’s company while cooking up delicious meals. But have you ever wondered if the kitchen has a heart of its own, a feature so central to its purpose that it couldn’t function properly without it? We are going to postulate that indeed it does, and it’s a heart that beats cold- your refrigerator!

You need to keep your food fresh, and the way to do that is to keep it cold, in some cases so cold it’s frozen! The refrigerator is classically divided into two distinct parts, the fridge itself and its partner the freezer. These can be arranged in a variety of ways, originally the freezer was placed at the top, but lately, the bottom mount fridge has become popular, which puts the freezer down below where it can naturally stay extra cold since heat rises!

The fridge works hard for us so our lettuce stays fresh and crispy, and our lunch meat is chilled and safe to eat. Because of the great service it does for hungry people, its popularity makes it the most used appliance in the kitchen, and the greatest consumer of energy. Fortunately, there is an easy way to keep your fridge running smoothly that will help reduce those costs while increasing its lifespan- keeping it clean!

Some Refrigerator Maintenance Tips That Will Help Ensure Your Fridge Runs At Peak Efficiency:

  • Check the coils and keep them clean. The condenser coils release the heat of running into the outside air. If they become covered with dust the fridge will stop running at peak efficiency. Clean the coils at least twice a year by unplugging the fridge, pulling it out from the wall, and cleaning them with your vacuum’s brush attachment.
  • Check the door seals and keep them clean. Make certain that the seals are tight and that no debris has collected on them that could prevent them from closing and sealing properly. If the cold air is seeping away out of a compromised seal, it’s costing you money on your energy bill! Give the seals a gentle cleansing with a soft toothbrush and a solution of baking soda and water.
  • Clean out the fridge’s inside regularly. Over time, a residue of bacteria, food debris, and mould is bound to collect on the fridge’s interior, on the door shelves, main shelves, and the walls so they need to be cleaned about once a month. Sometimes spills happen, make sure to mop them up right away. Also, check the condition of your stored food frequently, if something has been forgotten in there for too long it can decompose and grow mouldy, if that happens then bin it right away!
  • Check that the fridge and freezer are maintaining the correct temperature –  3°C for the fridge and -18°C for the freezer!

It’s important to keep your kitchen’s cold heart working at its healthy best! Your fridge makes sure you are well-fed and happy, so show it the love it needs and keep it clean!
