The Covid-19 pandemic shutdowns led to some sophisticated drinking at home. Out-of-work bartenders started posting videos and tutorials showing how to make fancy drinks and twists on the classics.
Whether you were inspired by drink tutorials or began entertaining at home during the shutdowns, putting a bar in the home and adding some home bar furniture seems to be a trend.
Are you thinking about how to build a bar in your home? Dry bar vs. wet bar: which one is right for your space? Keep reading to learn the pros and cons of each.
What’s The Difference?
The two home bar styles from which your can choose are wet bar and dry bar but what’s the difference? Some of you may be thinking…”A bar is a bar. It’ll be a great addition to the home no matter what.”
Simply put, a wet bar includes a built-in sink and a dry bar doesn’t. Which one you choose will depend on where you’re going to put it and whether you want to and are able to run the plumbing to include a sink.
Pros and Cons of a Wet Bar:
With a wet bar, you’ll find that it’s easier to make drinks for a large group when you’re able to wash glasses right there. Wet bars also have more storage because they require a cabinet or some kind of structure to house the sink. The added storage allows for all of the supplies for mixing different drinks.
On the downside, the plumbing can be costly. You have to make sure you put your bar near an existing plumbing line and hire a plumber to hook up the new sink.
And keep in mind that you might not get a good return on your investment as wet bars may be considered dated.
Pros and Cons of a Dry Bar:
Dry bars can go in any space in your home with no concern about added plumbing. You can also use a nice piece of furniture to display bottles and glassware in an otherwise unusable spot in your family room or dining room.
Dry bars are usually smaller in size and without a sink, are not ideal for entertaining a large group. You also may need to limit your drink menu to eliminate added trips to the kitchen.

Will you regret not putting in a sink? It might end up costing more but if you’ll use it, it’s money well spent.
